Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
The remnants of hurricane Gustavo are drenching NW Arkansas. Here on top of Gaither mountain we have had at least 3 inches of rain, and it is still coming down.
Stay away from the river area if you value your life. This situation is extremely dangerous. It would be extremely dangerous with much less rain than is predicted. The forecast calls for perhaps 6 inches of rain today. We have had enough water recently so that I think flooding of 43 in the valley is possible.
I am holed up with my notebook spewing out more for the website. The interest has really been building in this place and this site. Yesterday was something like 700 hits and the curve is going straight up.
Do what I am doing, stay the hell away from the Buffalo National River today. It can and will kill you. I hope nobody is camping in the wilderness near the river level. I can assure you it could surge multiple feet in an instant. Read my entry on flash flooding on the buffalo river if you have any doubt.
If you have any family camping in the BNR, be damn concerned. Get them the hell out if you can. They are in real danger. I am not kidding, and I am not talking inconvenience, I am talking death. Flash flooding is the single most dangerous thing here.
Here are the links for the latest Buffalo River water levels from the USGS Water Levels:
Boxley (South end of Boxley Valley)
Ponca (North end of Boxley Valley)
Pruit (Pruit ranger station at Highway 7)
St. Joe (Middle river area down highway 65 just west of Tyler Bend access)
Harriet (Lower river area, near Buffalo Point access)
Just another note, and rant. The USGS has not seen fit to link its measurement system closely with the Buffalo National River Park, where people might actually be in harms way. Typical governmental tower of babble. The above attempts to decode this for regular people.
The USGS Water Level listings are under the White River Basin, just to make things convenient and understandable to people who know nothing about this place.
