Buffalo National River and NW Arkansas
Today was not a very good day in the valley. Cloudy, foggy, kind of generally cruddy. The elk were oddly pinned up against the fence because grazing cattle were gradually moving in on them. I look for a certain migration, probably to the south of the observation pullout. Cattle and elk don't mix.

It is possible they could end up in the field in Lost Valley. The migrations happen often at night, so be sure and check that field.

See my in-depth entry today on photographing elk in the post rut period. It includes many of my favorite photos from this time of year. This may be the very best time to get killer shots of bull elk because of the bachelor bull herds. There now two bachelor bull elk herds now, one of small bulls, and the other of the rulers. The big guys have one huge bull in the herd.

huge bachelor bull
This is one huge bachelor bull. Up against a very dark background like this, be sure to over-expose at least one stop and by all means shoot RAW.

bull elk stares me down
Bull elk gesturing toward me, apparently warding off evil as best he understands it.
Herd bull is confronted by bull calf, they just don't mix. He bluffed him off, but they just moved later.
This looks like bugling, but this bull is checking the air for scent.
